Former MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota leads the pack of potential 2013 Republican mayoral candidates — but he would get stomped by a Democrat in November, a new poll showed.

The Quinnipiac University survey — one of the first to be released since Lhota left his MTA post to explore a run for mayor — had 23% of GOP voters picking him, to just 9% for billionaire grocer John Catsimatidis, runnerup in the hypothetical primary. But the poll found Lhota would lose a general election contest to Democrats Christine Quinn (62-17%); Bill de Blasio (57-17%); and Bill Thompson (55-19%).

Lhota saw the results in a positive light. “Even before I begin my campaign, to have polling numbers like this is quite pleasing,” he said in a statement.

In the horse race on the Democratic side, the poll had Quinn, the City Council speaker, garnering 35%, to 11% for Public Advocate de Blasio.
