Helmand residents protest land grab claims

Kabul, Jan 24 : Residents of Lashkar Gah, the capital of southern Helmand province, protested against the confiscation of their lands, saying that local officials of Kariz village had allowed illegal construction of a police building on their land.

Police chief of Zone 707 Esmatullah Dawlatzai rejected the claims saying that the building was being constructed on government land and that it had been confirmed by a government committee.

"This is a government land handed over to police command of Zone 707 by the province's properties committee," Dawlatzai told TOLOnews. "What these people claim is baseless."

One of protesting residents said, "According to the constitution, no one, not even the government, has the right to arbitrarily ruin somebody's personal property."

Dawlatzai added that there is more than 100 acres of land belonging to the government.

The construction work of the command's facility will continue, he said, adding that once construction is complete, the new quarters will resolve much of the issues that local command has faced previously.
