Presence of troops in IHK hurdle in road to peace: Gilani

Srinagar, July 31 (Newswire): In occupied Kashmir, veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani has said that India has betrayed Kashmiris by not fulfilling the promises made with them in the past 64 years.

Syed Ali Gilani addressing a public meeting titled 'Kashmir: The roadmap to peace' organised at a college in Srinagar by New Delhi-based think-tank, Centre for Policy Analysis (CPA) said that road to peace in Kashmir was blocked by presence of Indian troops in the occupied territory.

"United Nations Security Council has passed 18 resolutions on Kashmir after India took the case to it. On August 7, 1952, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru also promised that Kashmiris would be given right to decide their future."

He ruled out division of Jammu and Kashmir on religious lines and demanded right to self-determination for the people of all regions.

The veteran Hurriyet leader challenged the pro-India parties to prove their representative character in absence of Indian forces. "Let forces be withdrawn and then we will see who represents the people," he said.  He said that praising of puppet Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah by Indian Home Minister was shameful. "Chidambaram last year said that Kashmir issue is all about broken promises. Rather than fulfilling these promises, he is now praising Omar Abdullah for imprisoning Kashmiris," he said.

Syed Ali Gilani also criticized the role of CPA saying that it should not hold meetings and seminars in occupied Kashmir. "It is like informing the informed. The role of CPA is to apprise outsiders about the reality of the Kashmir issue. We do not have to tell the reality to people here. They know the situation very well," he added.

Speaking on the occasion, APHC leader, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, said that the term peace had been abused most in occupied Kashmir. "For New Delhi peace means silencing the voice of dissent," he said, adding that the APHC always supported the dialogue, but New Delhi never made the forward movement.

APHC leader, Muhammad Abdullah Tari, said that the tripartite talks amongst India, Pakistan and genuine Kashmiri leadership were the only way forward. He said that the Kashmiri people could not give India and Pakistan an equal status.

"Pakistan has always been our supporter while India has always beaten us. How can we place India and Pakistan on a same platform, " he stated. Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front-R leader, Javed Ahmed Mir said, the road to peace in Kashmir leads to a concentration camp or a torture cell.

The member of so-called Kashmir Assembly, Engineer Abdur Rashid said, "Kashmir is a dispute and India needs to accept this fact." He said that the Kashmiris were offering sacrifices for right to self-determination.

He also urged New Delhi to improve its human rights record in Kashmir adding, government of India is about to hang Afzal Guroo but what about those army men, who have killed thousands of innocent people in Kashmir.

Among others, Director of Centre for Policy Analysis, Seema Mustafa, Muhammad Saleem, Shahid Siddiqui, Arjun Roy and Aziz Pasha also spoke on the occasion.
