IHK: People protest against non-availability of civic amenities

Bandipora, Feb 3 : Thousands of residents of this held Kashmir town are up in arms against the Municipal Committee for the alleged negligence in providing civic amenities and sanitation to the residents.

More than 3,000 families living in various wards falling within Bandipora Municipality limits and adjoining areas are living a miserable life in absence of proper civic amenities for the past two years.

Locals blame Municipal Committee Bandipora for turning the Bandipora market into a ‘garbage dump.’

“A few months ago municipal authorities had placed dustbins in the area to collect the garbage.

Later these were sent either to the houses of influential people or schools,” locals told Greater Kashmir.

“Our repeated pleas to get the dustbins back have fallen flat on the deaf ears,” they added.

Residents in the ward No. 2,3,1,11,12 13 14,15,16,10,11,09 and 17 complained that in the absence of proper drainage system has forced the them to come out on streets but as usual they were given false assurances.

They said that lack of proper sanitation in residential areas of the town has been emerging as a big problem these days. Heaps of garbage are seen in the parks, grounds, roads and common passages.

Unfortunately, authorities seem to be least concerned about the problems faced by the people.

“We have given hundreds of representations to the concerned authorities to lay down proper drainage system in the area. Till date we have only received false assurances,” locals said.

Areas which have drains are filled with filth as these have never been cleaned. Ironically, over 3,000 families are worst affected in the entire area comprising over two dozen localities as they want proper drainage system to be constructed. Though the government is trying hard to maintain the sanitation but this could not be effective till there was no construction of drains, residents alleged.
Areas like Nopwpara, Nathpora, Kaloosa, Kharpora, Usman Abad, Muslimabad, Rather Mohalla, Ajar, Madar and Nusoo face problem of water logging every year due to absence of drainage system.
