Ganderbal, Dec 22 :
In its endeavour to spread awareness about the menace of female foeticide,
Khatoon Welfare Society (KWS), an NGO organized a seminar at Government Girls
Higher Secondary School here.
The seminar was attended by the members of KWS, students, teachers while Additional Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Muhammad Haroon was the chief guest.
Addressing the seminar, chairperson of KWS, Dr Raheela said that this menace had spread due to ignorance of people from moral and religious teachings.
“Lack of basic awareness and education about women policy and sex selection are primary causes of this evil,” Dr Rahella said.
ADC Ganderbal Muhammad Haroon called for strict laws to stop the evil. “Emphasis should be put on medical ethics while controlling the foeticide,” he said.
On the occasion, Imam of the area appealed the people to refrain from the female foeticide.
“This menace was prevalent in the age of ignorance. But after the advent of Islam this practice was stopped. We all are educated and we must refrain from this evil while is morally, ethically and religiously wrong,” he said.
He said there is need to educate people about the issue. “It is the duty of all Imams and religious scholars and leaders to come forward to nip this evil in the bud. Curbing use of medical technology is not going to help until there is huge societal pressure,” he added.
Quoting figures about the illegal practice, KWS members said that the misuse of USG machines is prevalent in Kashmir.
Earlier the organizers said objective of the seminar was aware people about ill-effects of female foeticide in the remote villages. KWS has engaged youth volunteers for this endeavour.
