Baramulla, Dec 19 : Most of the street-lights installed in the town here have been rendered non-functional due to lack of maintenance.
This hampers smooth movement of inhabitants during evening hours and causes immense inconvenience to them.
The street–lights worth Rs 1.50 crore were installed four years ago in the town. While Muncipal Council Baramulla installed these lights in the civil lines, the Power Development Department) PDD) undertook the job in Old town here.
Ironically the Muncipal and PDD authorities failed to undertake maintenance of these lights claiming the don’t have manpower or funds for it.
The locals minced no words to accuse the concerned authorities of non-serious approach. “Despite many reminders over the years the PDD and Muncipal authorities have failed to restore the street lights. We can’t venture out in the evenings as the whole areas reels under darkness,” said Ghulam Rasool, a local.
The defunct street lights have affected business activity in the town. “In absence of street lights people face problems to reach the markets here in evenings. This forces us to close our business establishments and shops early. Despite paying taxes for basic facilities, the authorities have failed to even repairing the street lights,” they said.
“If the street lights are made functional markets will definitely remain abuzz with the business activity during the late hours,” said Farooq Ahmad, a businessman.
When contacted Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Khwaja Ghulam Muhammad assured to get the problem rectified.
“We will take up the issue with PDD and Municipal Council. The issue will be sorted within a week,” the DC said.
